THE POWER OF PASSION
When people think of the word passion, they generally think of sex. But passion is much more complex. Passion, as defined by Webster’s New World Dictionary, is "any strong emotion—such as hate, love or fear; intense emotional excitement; the object of any strong desire."
Have you ever wanted something or someone so badly that it hurt—that you found yourself aching? Passion is about love, about happiness, and it is about wanting. It is about hunger. Because we are dealing with strong emotions, it is about the heart. Look at these words—heartfelt, heartache, heartbeat and heartburn. Passion is about the vulnerable side of you.
Do you know that our decisions are almost 100 percent emotional? Think about it. I remember years ago when I walked into the Porsche showroom in New Haven, Connecticut. A distinguished gentleman saw me eyeing a gorgeous 911 model. He came over to me and we looked at it together. He didn’t have to convince me of anything. All he said was, "Isn’t she a beauty?" The deal was done. I bought the car.
When you sense a passionate calling or intuition, heed it. Then receive it. And then, finally, follow it. Maybe, for reasons of finances, or children, or other earthly responsibilities, you are not able to immediately respond to its call. But unless you respond, in some way, something in your mind will nag at you to pay attention until you resolve the conflict.
Maybe you don’t have to quit your job to follow this passion. Perhaps it should be an avocation rather than your "real job." If you are a passionate gardener, maybe your purpose is best served by spending more time working in your own garden rather than changing careers to be a gardener.
A F F I R M A T I O N
"I have a passionate vision for my life."
So what do you feel passionate about? What gets you really excited? What do you love to do? Make a list of the top six things you love to do. Think of the activities where time flies, or where you forget about everything else going on around you. When this happens, you are probably following your "bliss" as Joseph Campbell calls it.
There is an interesting relationship between pain and passion. Sometimes, when we are not following our passion, we are following our pain. When Christopher and I were writing this chapter, he reminded me of the pain he felt when he was working at PricewaterhouseCoopers:
"What happened?" I asked him. PAINT A PASSIONATE PICTURE "They were so pleased with my work that they wanted to make me a partner in the firm." "Wasn’t that a big compliment?" "Of course. I would have been the youngest partner in the San Francisco office." "And you turned it down?" "I had to. I was in such pain doing a job that I had no passion for. I was crying on the inside. Every day was empty. I knew I needed to get out of there, but I was afraid to take the next step. When I left to become a real estate broker, my passion came back and I was free."
When we do not follow our calling, we suffer in some way. When we talk to others about the purpose and passion in their lives, we are amazed at the number of people who have not experienced much passion. Countless women admit to passionless marriages. They remain in their marriages for financial security reasons or for their children. They never step up to the plate and demand more intimacy from their husbands. They allow themselves to "settle."
Are you leading a passionless life? How would you feel if you lived every day with wonderfully strong feelings about how you are living your life? Massive abundance is about living your life with passion. If you haven’t gotten really clear about your vision for your life, now is the time to do so. There is no time like today. If you have that nagging feeling that you could be doing more, then you probably could be doing more. What would you like to do? What would you like to give back to the world? What special gifts would you like to share with others?
